There is no other place in the world with such heavy flow of vehicles through a single line traffic in a very short span of time like the one from Pathanapuram to Pamba and Erumely to Pamba.During MandalaMakaraVila season 2009-10, the number of vehicles traveled through this route, was 295000. This includes bus, minibus, light motor vehicles, auto rickshaws and two wheelers. Quite naturally the numbers of accidents were comparatively high in each season. The Motor Vehicles Department thus made a proposal to make these routes a ‘Safe Zone’ for the Sabarimala pilgrims for reducing accidents and submitted a proposal in this respect to the Road Safety Authority of Kerala in October 2010. Accordingly the Authority accorded sanction for implementing the Project in the Mandala — MakaravilakkU season.

In order to reduce accident rate, Regional Transport Office Pathanamthitta initiated the Project ‘Safe Zone’ in association with other Government departments and NonGovernmental OrganisationS for Mandala — Makaravilakku season.
